Repairs on footpaths – absolute priority BY KYLE KNOWLES The state of footpaths in Shirley have come under scrutiny from Mayor Lianne Dalziel. She said the city cannot be split in two, with one side being left with broken footpaths while other parts have perfect footpaths. “You can’t see the city divided like this. It is absolutely imperative we get money into the budget for this.

“If people can’t get down to the shops from their houses, there is something fundamentally wrong four years down the track. During the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board’s submission to the city council, three board representatives, Tim Sintes, Linda Stewart and Andrea Cummings as well as Ms Dalziel agreed the footpaths were in a terrible state and money needed to be found for repairs.

Ms Cummings said her own children have both been hospitalised after falling on the cracked and pot-holed walkways, with her son breaking his wrist and daughter sustaining a head injury. Ms Dalziel said the BurwoodPegasus ward was the worst-affected ward in the city, and called for a report to be undertaken to find out how much funding was actually needed to repair footpaths.

BLINDS...Cleaned, Repaired & Restored...

“I think this is an absolute priority for the ward, no question in my mind. This is a huge issue and I’m happy you have raised it. It is really, really important.â€? The community board requested that $19 million from the museum redevelopment capital grant be deferred and those funds used for immediate footpath repairs. • Turn to page 2

$200k pledge for hospital Harewood woman Rebecca Taylor has pledged to give $200,000 to the Canterbury Charity Hospital if she wins a national milk company promotion. Miss Taylor has joined Anchor Families, a promotion run by Anchor Milk, which is offering up a grand prize of $200,000. In the event she wins, she has pledged her winnings to the hospital. The Canterbury Charity Hospital Trust was established by the community, for the community in 2007. Over the years many doctors, nurses, dentists, health professionals and public-spirited people have volunteered their time and expertise to help make the charity hospital a success and enable it to provide its services for free. Its patients come from throughout Canterbury within the Canterbury District Health Board area. They do not receive any Government funding and rely on donations, grants and the generosity of the wider community to continue helping Cantabrians in need. Miss Taylor received dental work treatment at the hospital recently. “They are a wonderful team of more than 280 unpaid volunteer surgeons, dentists, nurses, clinicians and other support staff, and they give up their time to make this service available to the people of Canterbury. “I am so grateful for the amaz-

The Burwood-Pegasus Community is scheduled to have a site visit and internal inspection of the earthquake-damaged QE II Sports House this afternoon before its meeting. Members of the board would like to see it saved from demolition with Linda Stewart and Glenn Livingstone indicating they would like it saved if possible. The building was previously part of the New Brighton Trotting Club and was also a Civil Defence building before being used by Canterbury Cricket. The building is not on the New Zealand heritage register but is of historical importance.

GOOD DEED: Rebecca Taylor with Sylvester, the Canterbury Charity Hospital Trust’s cat, will donate $200,000 prize money to the hospital, if she wins a national milk company promotion.

Beautifying project The South Brighton Residents’ Association’s treasurer Kirsten Carey is expected to make a deputation regarding the beautification of the South Brighton area tonight at the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board meeting. The association is proposing three things to beautify South New Brighton, including planting pohutakawa trees along the north side of Bridge St, installing sculptures and a welcome sign to South New Brighton.

Interest in science leads student Christchurch Girls’ High School student, Sienna MacArthur-Beadle, is one of 150 students worldwide selected to attend the International Advanced Space Academy in Huntsville, Alabama, in July. Bridget Rutherford spoke to her about school, space and what she hopes to experience at the camp. So Sienna, can you tell me a bit about yourself? I’m in my final year at Christchurch Girls’ High School. I am junior liaison prefect, so I work with the juniors and make sure they are immersed in the school culture. There are two of us and we look after the year 9 and 10s. Is working with junior students something you have an interest in? Definitely. When it came to apply for prefect, I realised I was quite interested in working with younger students. They didn’t seem to have much of a voice just because they were the younger students, so I just wanted to help. It generally just means that we ensure they have settled in and they are making friends, and are happy. We work with the teachers and deans to provide assistance. And where are you from? I’m Christchurch born and bred. I’m from St Albans and I went to Elmwood Normal School and Heaton Intermediate before Girls’ High. And when did you first become interested in science and space? I’ve always been incredibly in-

quisitive, occasionally to the frustration of my parents and older sister. I’ve always been interested in science and especially space because I find it so fascinating. My time did used to involve my parents taking us to do random activities so we knew what was going on. When I was 10, we went to see an American astronaut talking at Canterbury University. His name was Donald Pettit, and I found that very interesting. I’d say that was one of the reasons that I became quite interested in space. The vastness of everything and the size and scale and the fact that it’s infinite is incredible. Can you tell me a bit about the camp you have been selected to attend? It’s called the Advance Space Academy. I think it has around 150 students attending from about

23 countries. It is a full week of lots of things and it is quite leadership focused. We get to do a simulated weightlessness activity. I was introduced to it through my biology teacher, he was encouraging lots of us to apply for it. I had to collate a CV and copies of my passport and fill out an application form, and they chose me. I just sort of told them about myself and the way I work and my interests. I leave on July 16. When did you find out you had been selected? It would have been three weeks ago that I found out. I just read it

in the subject line of my email. I had a little panic and a little cry of excitement. I just didn’t expect it at all. Sometimes I assume I’m not going to get something, like when I do a test at school and think I haven’t done so well, but then it all turns out fine. Where is the camp? It is in Huntsville, Alabama. Have you ever been to the United States before? I haven’t. I’m going to be travelling there for the first time and without my family. But I’m used to travel and airports so I don’t think I’ll have any problems.

So you have done a bit of travel? I’ve been overseas quite a few times with my family. We’ve been to Singapore, the United Kingdom, Belgium, France, Italy, Switzerland, Vietnam, Indonesia, Morocco and Spain. There have been other stop overs in other places too. Do you know any of the other students selected from New Zealand? I don’t personally know them. They’re all from the North Island, but we’ve got a 15h 30min flight over there so I’m sure I will get to know them then.

on space odyssey What are you most looking forward to about this camp? Well I’ve never been scuba diving before and that’s part of the simulator activity so that will be cool, but I’m actually just really excited about all of it. What do you plan to do in the future? I’m not fully sure yet, I’m thinking of going to university and I’m tossing up between Canterbury and Dunedin. I haven’t decided on a particular course yet. I’ve got to knuckle down and do some research on the courses, but definitely something to do with science and preferably hands-on. I’m not really into a desk research style job. Would you like to go to space one day? I think I would if I was given the opportunity. Most people when they watch all those space movies, they think things could go terribly wrong. But it would be great not to be limited to one planet and to see so much more. All I have to do is work for NASA and then I would be sorted! Would you like to work for NASA? I don’t know if I’d like to live in the US, so I’m not sure if I would. So what do you think you will learn at this camp? Generally I’ll learn specific space information but I would also like to work on my leadership and communication skills. It will be difficult having nothing in common with the other students there other than one thing. But I

ADVENTURE: The US Space and Rocket Centre in Huntsville, Alabama, where Sienna MacArthur-Beadle will visit in July. think I’m naturally good at starting conversation already, so I’ll be working on applying the skills I’ve learned already. How long will you be in the US for? Well I leave from New Zealand on July 16 and get back on July 26. We all fly to Sydney first, and

then to Dallas then to Huntsville. I will miss all of week one of term three of school. How is the whole trip funded? There is a foundation called the Talented Students Travel Award fund and that pays for 70 per cent of my costs, so I only have to pay 30 per cent, so it’s very manageable. What subjects do you take at school and how have you found it so far this year? I take biology, chemistry, physics, calculus and English. We’ve only had a few internals so far and I’ve got all the grades I was hoping for so it’s been good. Are any of your friends interested in space like you are? I don’t think any of them would pin me as a space nerd, it’s more of a quiet interest. But most of my

friends are working at the same level as me at school. One of my friends from school has actually been selected to go to a science camp in Sydney. Do you have a telescope or any similar equipment? No I don’t. The stars are okay in Christchurch, I’d say mediocre at best in terms of clarity. But I went to the one in the Art’s Centre about a month before the earthquake when it was destroyed, so that was cool getting to use it before that happened. What are some of your other interests and hobbies? I don’t really do all that much out of school because it’s my down time, I get to come home and power down. But I read quite a lot and I quite like drawing. I did art in NCEA level 1 but I stopped doing that because I went down the science road. • The 150 students were selected from 23 different countries to attend the camp because they had a genuine interest in space science, and will be studying some form of science at university next year. The programme is designed to promote space science and exploration. Activities will include hands-on astronaut training, as well as learning about the mental, emotional and physical demands astronauts must face. Leadership training is also included and the students will experience scuba diving and four G’s of lift-off force and actual weightlessness in the space simulator.

5

Students bound for science camp Two students from Christchurch Girls’ High School and Burnside High School will travel to Sydney to attend a science school camp in July. Juliette Soule and Jessica Dunn were among six New Zealand students selected, to attend Professor Harry Messel’s International Science School which runs for two weeks. The students were selected by the Royal Society of New Zealand. ISS is an educational event, held biennially, based at the University of Sydney. The camp aims to encourage senior high school students across the world to consider careers in science. A total of 145 students from Australia, China, Japan, India, Singapore, Thailand, the United Kingdom and New Zealand will attend. Over the two weeks, the students will participate in a range of activities including lectures by renowned scientists, hands-on scientific workshops and an active social programme. The theme of ISS 2015 is BIG – big experiments, big discoveries, big ideas. The Physics Foundation at the University of Sydney pays for accommodation, meals and activities. The students’ travel is funded by the Talented School Students Travel Award, administered by the Royal Society of New Zealand and funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

Cotswold pupils get Samoan inspiration Rooms 17, 18 and 24 at Cotswold Primary School have been learning about Samoan art this year. The students have been learning about different techniques and using print-making tools. They have been printing with ink, using crayon and dye as well as creating their own tapa prints. A Samoan chief, Ene Otto, visited the three classrooms to talk about Samoan art. He showed the pupils different designs, including his own tattoos, and talked about the differences in schooling in Samoa compared to New Zealand. It was very exciting for the three classrooms as Bianca van Leeawen from the Christchurch Art Gallery went to the school to teach an art lesson. The lesson started by looking at two Pacific Island artists, Fatu Feu’u from Samoa and John Pule from Niue. Both artists use tapa to tell their stories. The colours used were mainly black and orange as these colours are reflected in the dye that can be sourced from the environment. Most of the images came from nature such as birds, plants and fish. After gaining inspiration from these Pacific Island artists, the pupils were able to design their own pattern. These designs were then transferred onto a foam block and ink rolled to create tapa prints. Abby Baxter, 8, enjoyed turning the print over to reveal the design. “I enjoyed drawing on the foam,” said Kyle Peterson. Elizabeth Foot said: “My favourite part was choosing which design to draw.”

GET CREATIVE: Skyla Stevens, 8, creating her own design for a tapa print. ARTWORK: Abby Baxter, Kyle Peterson and Elizabeth Foot, all aged 8, with their finished tapa prints.

Raising money for Nepal quake victims

HAVING A GO: Hana Gray and Bridie Cameron, both 10, practicing their new squash skills.

Cotswold school pupils were concerned with the recent Nepal earthquake. The Student Voice, a group of pupil representatives from each class decided they wanted to help by raising money for the quake victims. Teacher Miss Dudley assisted the Student Voice with all their projects. Earlier this week, notices went home about a coin trail. A painting of Mt Everest was created for the coins to be put on. Squash court a real enjoyment Cotswold’s school hall now has a giant squash court inside to teach squash skills. Canterbury Squash representatives will be spending two days with the senior children teaching them the skills of ball control, hitting and striking, as well as the rules of playing squash. The court will remain in the hall for two weeks with each class receiving four lessons to

practice their squash skills. The children use tennis-sized balls made of yellow rubber to practice and really enjoy using the actual squash court to put their skills to the test. Hana Gray enjoyed the skills session where “you roll the ball on the racket and hit the ball on each side”. Bridie Cameron said: “It was really fun. The hitting was the best part.”

Plunket’s new base opens with celebrations Four years after Plunket’s Canterbury Area Office was damaged in the February 2011 earthquake, Plunket’s Christchurch staff and volunteers have a new home-base. Prime Minister John Key officially opened Plunket’s new Canterbury Plunket Office – Southern Region last week, at an event which celebrated the strength and resilience of Christchurch Plunket people in continuing to provide support for local families following the earthquakes. The new building at 5–7 Twigger St, Addington will be Plunket’s South Island operations hub, a base from which staff will work

to support families in Christchurch and across the South Island. It replaces Plunket’s Area Office on Oxford Tce, which had served as the charity’s Canterbury headquarters since 1922. “Today’s event is a celebration and reflection of the strength, resilience and dedication our Plunket people have shown since the earthquakes. It is thanks to a strong team of dedicated people that we are here opening this new office,” said Plunket area president Liz McClure. She extended Plunket’s thanks to the many volunteers and funders involved in the building

of the new Southern Region hub. Plunket’s chief executive Jenny Prince said: “The opening of the new building is a big step in the recovery for our Plunket people here in Christchurch. If we go back to the time immediately after the quake, the families of the region were top of mind for our Plunket team, who often put them in front of their own needs. I congratulate the Canterbury board and operations teams on the wonderful new operations hub, from which I know there will be some amazing work go in to supporting families.”

▌FLAME ▌ FILES

Arsonists turn to historic buildings The whole city has become used to the seemingly never-ending series of arson fires it has suffered. Recently these have lessened considerably, at least partially, due to the fact most places have now been demolished. Unfortunately this leaves buildings like the historic barn in River Rd, that was completely destroyed last week. The earthquake has robbed the city of many buildings that were reminders of our past. This barn was well over 100-years-old. It is gone. Just so

some clown could watch it burn. It’s scary to imagine what goes on in a brain that can think this is okay. Last week a lady in Dunedin, was harassed because she complained on television about parties happening in her street. Something similar often occurs in Riccarton, including last Saturday night when furniture was piled on to a bonfire on the road, while party-goers raged alongside in Rattray St. Firefighters had to approach under riot clad police protection to put the fire out.

We can do that. Because when the fire is out we can go back to our fire station. Not the situation for the locals however, who have to live as neighbours of the party houses. Consideration for others is not high on the list of priorities of the obnoxious clowns who set these fires and all but riot while they burn. A woman whose foot got stuck in a gate on Tuesday night in Woolston, was freed by the good teams from city and Woolston stations. Well done!

SuperNet champs start well BY KYLE KNOWLES

St Margaret’s have started the SuperNet season the way they finished it in 2014 – on a winning note. The 2014 SuperNet champions accounted for Marian College 28-20 but coach Helen Bryant described their first-up performance as “patchy”. “We had a slow start. It took a while to focus in the game and we dropped off a bit in the last quarter. It was a good defensive effort and it was good to get the first win out of the way”. Bryant said her side had a good preparation for the season with a number of warm-up games against other Christchurch schools in a tournament where teams played more than 10 games. Bryant said being able to play against other schools from Christchurch gave them a chance to gauge where they were at. She said the competition would be tougher than ever with traditional SuperNet schools Rangi Ruru and Christchurch Girls’ High not qualifying for the top section and playing in SuperNet reserves. As the defending champions, other teams may see St Margaret’s as a target but Bryant said her side was not thinking like that and were focusing on taking each game as it comes along and

not looking at the end game. “We don’t like to think of it that way. There are new teams and school netball sides change every year so we don’t go with that label (of targets) at all. We don’t consciously think of it and we are just looking at having a good game every week.” Bryant said captain Maddy

Bus priority project Don’t leave it too late draws little interest to check your credit record Today is the last day the public can have its say on the Riccarton Rd bus priority project – and there appears to have been little public interest. Submissions close at 5pm today, and just over 100 submissions have been received. There are three options that the public can submit on, with the first being whether or not to remove the Riccarton Rd roundabout. Plans include removing the roundabout and replacing it with traffic lights to cope with increasing traffic volumes. The other two options open for consultation are for central Riccarton from Clarence to Matipo Sts. One of those options is pedestrian-friendly, which has streetscape improvements to assist pedestrian movements. There would be no bus lanes, minimal on-street parking and restricted turns in and out of Riccarton Rd and Kauri and Division Sts. A median could run up the middle of the road with trees, and there would be on-road cycle lanes. The other option, the hybrid, would have a part-time eastbound bus lane which would assist with the movement of buses at those times. Roadside parking would be available outside of peak traffic times and a widened footpath on the southside would allow for some tree planting. A cycle lane would be incorporated into the bus lanes meaning

RELIABLE: Providing fast travel times for bus passengers is a key focus. the buses and cyclists would have to share at peak hour times. The whole project is focused on giving buses the right of way at peak times to provide fast travel times for passengers. City council infrastructure, transport and environment committee chairman Phil Clearwater said finding ways to make bus services more reliable is better for everyone. “We have identified outlined some options to address issues along Riccarton Rd. We want to hear what people think. “There are the bus priority measures, improvements for pedestrians and cyclists, and improvements for central Riccarton to make it a more inviting place to shop, work and do business. We urge people to tell us what you think,” he said. •For more information, or to make a submission, go to the city council’s website www.ccc.govt. nz/haveyoursay

James came to see us because he had been asked to pay a $500 bond in order to set up an electricity account – supposedly because of his bad credit record. He was shocked and wanted to find out what was on his credit record, and what he could do about it. Like a lot of our clients James had never really thought about his credit record, let alone looked at it, until he struck a problem. We often see clients who have been denied credit because of an issue on their credit record that they weren’t even aware of. Your credit record includes information about any payments you’ve defaulted on, and can also contain information about your repayment history. This means that whether or not you meet, or miss, your monthly payments on your credit card, mortgage or electricity or phone account, can end up on credit reporters’ databases – and on your credit report. Unfortunately for James there are three different credit reporters operating in New Zealand, so if you want to be absolutely sure what is on your credit record then you should ask all three of them for your credit record. The good news is that you have a legal right to get this information for free, although the credit reporters can charge a ‘reasonable fee’ if you require the information urgently. Make sure you choose

Knowing Your Rights

the free option when you contact each company. Sometimes it can be hard to find the free option on their website, but it’s worth persisting until you locate it. Once James had checked his credit record he was sure that it wasn’t right, so we helped him contact the credit reporter to investigate. If you believe that the information provided on your credit history is incorrect, you should contact the report provider and ask them to investigate so that the mistake can be corrected or further explained to you. To do this, make an application in writing to the agency that has provided the report, saying that

their information is not accurate and that you would like the incorrect details removed. If you have any problems doing this you can follow the credit provider’s complaints process. In James’ case he was able to successfully correct his credit record, but by the time he had sorted it all out he had already paid the bond in order to get his electricity account. So it pays to check your credit record before you come across a problem. To talk to one of our team about being a volunteer for Citizens Advice Bureau or discuss a problem with your credit rating phone 0800 367 222.

I had been through the hospital system, had steroid injections, hearing tests and scans to hopefully find a cause, but the end result was being told ‘There’s nothing we can do and you’ll just have to learn to live with it as many people do’. “I felt extremely frustrated and a little despairing as I didn’t think I would be able to cope, and then a friend told me about Gordon & Till Audiology, who were specialists in tinnitus. EQC UPDATE

KEEPING YOU INFORMED | MAY 2015

In the Know hub attracts crowds

EQC focussed on completing last 2% of home repairs With 98% of its Canterbury home repairs completed or underway, the Earthquake Commission is ensuring the remaining claims have a clear path to being settled, EQC Chief Executive, Ian Simpson says. “EQC has confirmed a settlement path for all but the most complex building claims, which make up the remaining 2%. “EQC has about 2,000 home repairs in Canterbury either underway or with a confirmed start date. That leaves approximately 1,300 Canterbury Home Repair Programme (CHRP) repairs yet to begin. Of these about half are on hold because owners have either deferred the repair or have questions about what has been proposed with the repair,” said Mr Simpson.

agreement with Fletcher EQR or EQC. EQC’s intention in setting this date, is to confirm a clear path for settlement by 1 June.

“EQC started contacting other customers in the CHRP range who do not have a confirmed start to their managed repair.

From that date, both the customer and EQC should be clear about how the customer’s claim will be settled. Customers still in dispute can continue talking to EQC and settlement will depend on their individual claim circumstances.

“We are also calling those who have deferred their managed repair to ensure both EQC and the customers are clear by 1 June on how their building claim will be settled,” Mr Simpson says.

Previously cash-settled customers will not be able to opt back into CHRP after 1 June. This is so EQC can finalise numbers left to adequately resource remaining repairs.

From 1 June, no more customers will be accepted into CHRP unless they have a prior

“The deadline does not signal the closure of the programme and repairs will continue for

as long as needed to complete those we are committed to.

Homeowners have been getting answers to their post-quake repair questions at the In the Know Hub.

“Cash settlement remains an option, that’s why it is important for people who are not sure about their status to contact EQC or talk to other agencies, such as the Residential Advisory Service (RAS). RAS is free and independent,” Mr Simpson says.

Individual homeowners, families and groups of multi-unit building owners have been making full use of the hub. For example, Christchurch homeowner Sheena Sherratt attended a seminar and Q&A session on increased flooding vulnerability.

Customers uncertain about their claim status can phone 0800 DAMAGE or make an appointment with EQC’s Community Contact Team which is available face-to-face at the community-led In the Know Information Hub at Eastgate Shopping Centre until 25 June.

Last year EQC publicised that there was $20 million worth of cheques that people had not presented six months after they were issued. Some cheques were cap payments of more than $100,000. The EQC cancelled all cheques near expiry, more than six months old, and started calling customers from 24 March, this year, to find out why they had not presented their cheques. EQC General Manager Customer and Claims, Gail Kettle, says there are a variety of reasons why people haven’t banked their cheques.

“For general information, people can drop in to get an update. To discuss a specific claim, you can book a time to talk with one of our Community Contact Team members there,” said EQC’s General Manager Customer and Claims, Gail Kettle. “We encourage our customers to come in to the Hub as it’s a great way to get answers to any questions they may have about our work, such as land settlements or the Canterbury Home Repair Programme.”

Cash cheques, says EQC The Earthquake Commission (EQC) has been contacting some of the 2000 customers who have still not banked settlement cheques some months after they were issued.

“While the slides were really good, the useful part was the explanation. There was a lot of information in a really short amount of time,” she said. “It was pretty good. It’s always useful when the experts are there.”

The Hub is a community-led initiative, developed in partnership with the recovery agencies, to provide residents with information on the recovery process, and is also supported by the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority, the Earthquake Commission and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

“Some were disputing scope of damage or settlement value, thinking it should be more; some found the task of engaging contractors to carry our repairs too daunting, and others had not received the cheques because they had moved addresses or sold the property,” she said. If you receive a cheque from EQC, you will not prejudice any future dispute over the settlement amount by depositing the cheque with your bank. “We would rather have this money in customers’ bank accounts. But if people were expecting a cheque that has not arrived, they should call us on 0800 326 243 so we can sort it,” Ms Kettle says.

So far EQC had arranged 290 payments, including a couple of cap cheques of around $100,000, but there are still many more payments to be made. Customers can contact EQC through 0800 DAMAGE (326 243) or info@eqc.govt.nz for more information.

The In the Know Hub is open Mondays to Wednesdays, 9am – 6pm, and late on Thursdays, 9am – 8pm, until June 25. (Closed Fridays, weekends and public holidays). To make an appointment to meet with EQC’s Community Contact Team at the Hub, call 0800 326 243. For more information on the In the Know Hub, seminar times, and to view videos of the seminars, visit: www.intheknow.org.nz

Excess invoice for CHRP building repair: why one repair has more than one excess One of the most common questions asked by customers in our Canterbury Home Repair Programme (CHRP) who have received their excess invoices is why have they been charged more than one excess when they only had one repair?

CANTERBURY SCORECARD

Under the Earthquake Commission Act 1993 (EQC Act), every valid claim lodged with EQC is subject to

an excess. We asked customers to lodge a building claim each time their home received new earthquake damage to comply with the EQC Act that directs EQC insurance cover to begin afresh after each event. For example, if a building was damaged in the September 2010, February 2011 and June 2011 earthquakes and a building claim was lodged for

each event, EQC will calculate three excesses. This is the same way we calculate excesses on cash settlements. The owner of that property will then receive one invoice which summarises all the excess information for that property’s building and related contents exposures. EQC will not charge an excess for a claim if we determine there was no damage attributable to it.

Gallipoli Tree planted

New Deputy Principal takes up position

On Friday 24 April, Burnside Principal Mr Holstein, and Mr O’Connor, Head of History, planted a kauri tree to commemorate the centenary of the Gallipoli landings. Accompanying the tree will be

a display board written by Mr O’Connor and designed by Year 13 student Niall Stewart, with information about a local man killed at Gallipoli. The planter box will be landscaped by Mr Land’s Environment Club.

At the beginning of Term 2 Ms Sally-Ann Goodman, pictured above, joined Burnside High School as Deputy Principal and the Divisional Principal for West Division. Ms Goodman was previously the Deputy Principal at Marian College and brings a wealth of experience in teaching and learning, and engaging students to achieve their best possible outcomes. She is looking forward to getting to know the West Division students and becoming involved in the wider life of the school. We wish Ms Goodman all the best.

Musicians selected for top Senior Girls’ Volleyball team win title national ensembles Six young musicians from Burnside High School are celebrating, having being selected for membership of New Zealand’s most prestigious youth ensembles. Hamish Smith (bass), Matt Howes (guitar), Ella Dunbar-Wilcox (vocalist), Robert Petch (drums) and David Petch (trumpet) were all selected to join the New Zealand Youth Jazz Orchestra. Membership of this band is open to all New Zealand secondary school students and tertiary students up to the age of 19 and there are only 20 places available. The five musicians will travel to Wellington in July for an intensive rehearsal course followed by a concert tour of the North Island. In Wellington they will be tutored by NZ jazz legends Dr Rodger Fox and Dr Dave Lisik with special guest artist, trumpeter Scott Wendholt. In the classical music sphere, also selected for national duties in the NZSO National Youth Orchestra are Sarang Roberts (violin) and Robert Petch (percussion) who will join New Zealand’s finest young orchestral musicians for a rehearsal course, led by world famous conductor Jose Luis Gomez. Concerts in Wellington and Christchurch will follow in early July. The NZSO NYO is open to students up to the age of 26 so to be selected while still attending high school is an outstanding achievement.

ith its history of success and innovation in many different areas, the school remains in a strong position to cater for a wide range of abilities and interests. Aranui Academies continue to offer niche programmes which are as popular as ever. The Aranui Services Academy is one of only four in the South Island, which have recently completed their two-week induction programme at Burnham Military camp. This very hands-on programme caters for the needs of students who flourish in a very practicalbased environment with a strong focus on physical skills and development, along with military drill, self-discipline training and outdoor adventure, including involvement in the Hillary Duke of Edinburgh scheme. Aranui is also very proud of the fact that it is a host school for the Canterbury Tertiary College (CTC) level 2 Cookery programme, where students attend for two

full days a week in an authentic commercial environment, and which provides 45 credits towards their Level 2 NCEA qualifications. All of our academy programmes, including Childcare, Carving, Basketball, Rugby League and Rugby Fundamentals and others are not only high interest programmes but contribute significantly with the credits for NCEA Level 2 and above. The new Aranui campus will be built alongside the existing school which will minimise disruption to the school. With this process beginning in July this year, students will have the opportunity to see this new project rising. With the spectacular multimillion dollar investment in the future of education in Eastern Christchurch, this new campus and the programmes it will offer will change the face of education in our region, and places in the new school will be highly sought after. We welcome you to participate in one of the personalised tours which are on offer over coming weeks. We look forward to meeting you and having the opportunity to chat with you about the school and the future developments. Members of the Establishment Board of the new campus will be present for prospective parents to meet and a display of the campus will be available to view.

Aidanfield Christian School continues to grow strongly and has become well established in the Halswell community.

P

rincipal Mark Richardson says that the roll has continued to grow and beginning this year with a very healthy figure of around 270 students. As a year 1 to 10 school, we have found that strong interest in the school continues to demonstrate the support of the church community in the schoolwide zone. There has also been an increase in parents who are non–church attending in the last year or two and suggesting there is a strong desire among parents for the values system that really good Christian schooling can consistently apply to life at school. Aidanfield Christian School is owned by The Christian Schools Trust, which has a long history of providing top quality Christian education. The trust has invested heavily into Aidanfield Christian School, and as a result all of the learning space, bar one, are modern and attractive learning environments. Two new classrooms are opening early next term and this adds to the 12 modern classrooms that make up

t year 9 and 10, students can choose to be part of Sport in Education classes at Hillmorton High School, where their teachers collaborate to produce engaging lessons based on the context of sport. They might for example, collect data in PE which they then study in a statistics unit in Maths. In English they could study “Speed Freak” or “Cool Running” and then in Maths consider measurement associated with the sporting context in the novel. Achievement data collected in 2013 and 2014 clearly showed that students in the SIE class outperformed their peers. A survey carried out by NZ Council for Education Research proved that they were more engaged, and had more positive attitudes towards study. Their attendance rates were excellent. Hillmorton is one of just eight schools nationwide involved in Sport NZ’s Sport in Education Project. If your child enjoys sport, then one of Hillmorton’s year 9 or 10 Sport in Education classes is a fantastic way of ensuring an engaging and positive experience at high school where academic achievement will prevail. rich sense of knowledge and creativity is the heart and soul of the successful and wellproven education system that Steiner stands for. Promoting imagination, creativity, academic acumen and hands-on learning skills from kindergarten through to year 13 is how the unique soul and spirit of each child is recognised. If your ideal school is child-focused, computer-free until high school, honours a gentle but effective learning curve that is driven by a child’s natural development

rather than National Standards driven, then the Steiner school is definitely worth a visit. We foster creativity and bring fun into learning in a highly structured way. Steiner education prizes the arts, creativity and imagination as multiple pathways to high levels of innovative thinking and efficient skill acquisition. Nurturing a child’s inquisitive mind is a key towards success, reflected in our excellent academic outcomes at primary and NCEA levels. Steiner education is equally rich with stories, plays, culture, literature, sports, art, maths, music, science, gardening, movement, festivals, care, love and enthusiasm – introducing each aspect of life at the most susceptible age, paving the way for a sharp intellect, a deep emotional life, a love for humanity and an intrinsic motivation for learning.

egistrations are now open for the 2016 Academic, Music and Boarding Scholarships at Medbury School. Located in Fendalton, Medbury School is the only independent preparatory boys’ school in Christchurch, offering an education for both dayboys and boarders from years 1 to 8. At Medbury, the focus is on the ‘whole boy’, so in addition to academic studies, more than 25 extracurricular activities are provided to expand the curriculum further, developing wider talents and interests. Medbury is a traditional school with traditional values and has a strong emphasis on manners and respect. Their vision is to provide an education that cherishes these

traditions, but also prepares boys for life in the 21st century. Medbury has adapted the NZ curriculum to meet the learning needs of boys. Small class sizes enable teachers to deliver a personalised learning programme, using a combination of technology and traditional teaching methods. When a boy leaves Medbury, he does so with an exploring and inquiring mind. He will feel confident, have high self-esteem and have an education equipping him for life in the 21st century. The scholarship examinations and music auditions will be held on Thursday, June 4. For more information, please contact Tanya Moore (Headmaster’s PA) on 351 6169 or visit medbury.school.nz.

Peerswick Scholarship 2011 winners Mark Holdaway and Dabin Jung

ear Riccarton High School awards two Peerswick Scholarships to year 8 students who show strengths in the academic, sporting, cultural and service fields. The term ‘Peerswick’ is an Upper Riccarton name which has been associated with the school since 1959 when the school magazine was named Peerswick. In the latter part of the 19th century, a local horse stud was called Peerswick after a famous racehorse at the stud called The Peer and the area was called Peerswick for many years. The 2011 winners were Mark Holdaway and Dabin Jung. Now in year 13, the two have made their mark in the school just as have all the Scholarship winners. Winning the $1000 Peerswick Scholarship was an achievement they were proud of as well as providing a useful investment for the future. At school they gained entrance to the top class, felt confident that they could achieve, and seeing their names on the honours board in the hall has been a constant reminder of their potential. Mark is one of the joint Heads of Arts this year with a fine pedigree in music. He is a member of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Symphony Orchestra where he plays the clarinet. He gained his LTCL two years ago in year 11. He has played for five years in the jazz band, the concert band, the orchestra, chamber groups and the sax quartet. This year, he is playing in the band for the school production of Bugsy Malone

in the first half and is on stage in the second half. He has been a member of the successful sport climbing team and has been school swimming champion twice in various age groups. Dabin is a class leader for a year 9 class this year and has played tennis, table tennis and badminton for the school and was part of the stage challenge team last year. She has sung in the choir and in the barbershop group. Both Mark and Dabin have achieved Excellence in NCEA in both year 11 and year 12. Outside of the classroom they have been part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award scheme, have attained the Bronze and Silver Awards and hope to complete their Gold Award this year. The two have medicine in their sights after they complete their year with Level 3 NCEA and perhaps Scholarship. Mark has been St John’s Southern Region Cadet of the Year, and his experiences with St John whetted his appetite for medical studies. As year 13s, they are very involved in student activities, organising events, mentoring year 9s at the beginning of the year and being role models through the school. They feel well prepared for this task as they have been encouraged to be leaders and show responsibility right from year 9. “Riccarton has given me many opportunities in class, in music and in achieving well through all my five years here. It is just the right size to get to know everyone and to be known by all the staff,” says Mark.

hirley Boys’ High School encourages students to strive for personal excellence. Learning occurs both inside and outside the classroom, reflecting the desire of the school to focus on teaching the whole person to ensure a lifelong desire for self-improvement. At Shirley Boys’ this is known as “BTB – better than before”. BTB leads to achievement which can be as modest as getting fit for a sport or improving a test score or learning to sing in a choir, or as spectacular as that achieved by 2014 Dux and Head Boy, Nic Wilson who was awarded a Premier New Zealand Scholar Award (awarded to the Top 10 students in NZ). Nic was one of only two students to get Top Scholar in two subjects. In addition, two other SBHS students received awards for obtaining three or more scholarships (including an Outstanding Scholarship) in 2014 and a further six received awards for one or more scholarships. At Shirley Boys’ High School, students are encouraged to participate in a vast array of sporting and creative (arts, drama, music, cultural groups) activities, and in many of these areas the students are expected to measure themselves against the best in the country and beyond. GETING THE RIGHT FIRST AID TRAINING

N

ot all first aid certificates are created equal. While first aid courses must achieve prescribed New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA) standards to be certified, not all training providers deliver the same course. There can be big differences in first aid courses among a range of training providers. Some courses range from teaching only the basic NZQA specified content and nothing else, to providing detailed and comprehensive content designed to familiarise participants to a wide range of likely emergencies. Providers offering shortened courses or courses not meeting NZQA Training Requirements are now in the spotlight. NZQA and the Department of Labour have published a factsheet to outline requirements for providers, learners and employers for first aid training based on currently registered NZQA unit standards. Below are a summary of what we think you should know. Course differences Training providers can market their courses under a wide range of names such as ‘Essential First Aid’, ‘Workplace First Aid’ or ‘Comprehensive First Aid’ and many other eye-catching titles. The term ‘workplace’ can vary from a small office to a large factory where the risks and potential injuries are just as wide. Employers should be cautious in thinking that a one-day workplace first aid course will meet their needs in industries such as construction, engineering, forestry and industrial. More advanced learning is important to meet the proper workplace assessments and meet health and safety obligations. The content of courses can also vary. Employers should check to see the first aid course is relevant to their particular industry risks. If there are risks of falling, or medium to high injury, then take care in the shortened courses as these subjects may not be covered. It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that employees attend courses appropriate to their industry risks. Unit standard-based first aid training These are the minimum requirements for both the initial and refresher training. The minimum duration of first aid training and assessment will be, for training based on: months from date of issue, a minimum of six hours training and assessment. • Unit Standards 6400, 6401 (or 26552) and 6402 (or 26551) - a minimum of 12 hours training First aid training must cover the outcomes of the NZQA first aid unit standards being assessed and assessment and any additional modules identified by the employer through the workplace risk assessment • Unit Standards 6401 (or 26551) and 6402 (or 26552) - a minimum of eight hours training and process as outlined in Department of Labour guidelines. assessment Only first aid training providers accredited by NZQA can award the credits and issue a first aid • For refresher training, where the learner’s certificate is no older than two years and three certificate. Care needs to be taken to ensure that the provider is actually registered with NZQA for this purpose. NZQA conduct regular External Evaluative Reviews on all training providers. New Zealand NEW ZEALAND RED CROSS Red Cross is proud to hold a double Highly Confident accreditation in both Educational GLOBAL LEADERS IN FIRST AID TRAINING Performance and Capability in Self-Assessment. or Freeman White, home is where the art is. Home also happens to be in the heart of Hawke’s Bay where a renovated colonial villa doubles as Freeman’s home and studio. Renovations to it began after he graduated from The Learning Connexion in 2001. It has been, in his eyes, “an evolving work of art in its own right.” Just as home renovating requires a whopping amount of dedication and discipline, so too does the journey of becoming a self-sustaining artist. In Freeman’s case, all his work and constant practice paid off when, in 2006, he won first prize at the Adam Portrait Awards with his textural painting ‘Portrait of Hans’. “Winning was the most definitive point in my early artistic career,” explains Freeman. “This legitimised my work and allowed me to get my name recognised. It also opened up a number of opportunities.” Since that first major coup, Freeman’s paintings have been showcased in the separate Adam Portrait Awards and other shows such as the Hawke’s Bay Invitational and the Norsewear Art Awards. Freeman’s work has appeared in highly regarded publications in New Zealand, and seven of his paintings reside in the collection of the New Zealand Portrait Gallery. The Royal Society of New Zealand has also collected his works; a testament to Freeman’s timeless and original style. It is no surprise then that he was nominated ‘Wellington’s Top Artist’ by the Wellington Capital Times’ ‘Best of 2010’ poll.

Self-portrait of Freeman White

Freeman’s artistic journey has seen him undertake a number of artist residencies in locations as diverse as Edinburgh and Louisiana. “I have always found these experiences inspiring and they always produce definitive work,” he says. “There is no better way to travel really. I love doing residencies…it’s like a dream come true.” Painting commissions (such as portraits for the recent What We Do in the Shadows film), as well as exhibiting work, ensures Freeman’s creative career remains sustainable. At the same time, he continues to evolve his thick and loose impasto style of painting, which is at the core of his perceptive portraits and iconic landscapes. And, always ready to up the ante, he searches out new opportunities and goals, one of which is to eventually win the coveted Wallace Art Awards. But it is his passion to steadily grow as an artist which is truly the foundation upon which he builds his flourishing career from his home base in the bay. This includes both the exchange of air to the outside as well as circulation of air within the building. Filtered air supply for summer and filtered and warmed air in winter creates a healthy environment in which to live and work. Talk to the experts

M

Mitsubishi Designer series

ost people are aware that heat pumps are the most costeffective and convenient solution but how do you make sure you get the right one for you? Every manufacturer tells you their heat pump is the best, quietest, most energy efficient, and each has a multitude of constantly updating/changing models on offer. Plus, New Zealand homes tend to be very individual in size, shape and location, which greatly affects heating and performance requirements. There are three essential steps to ensure you get the right solution for your home: • Get the right size. This requires accurate measurement of the volume of the air to be heated in your property and an understanding of heat loss and air flow characteristics. • Get the right model. What was right for your neighbour might not be right

for you. Heat pumps are constantly changing and being improved. • Get it installed correctly. Probably the most misunderstood element. If a heat pump is not installed correctly it will not function at its rated output, may fail prematurely and void the warranty. The answer is to talk to a company that knows about all the brands and can give impartial expert advice. Heat Pump Guys are independent dealers. Unlike most companies that are tied in to one manufacturer, they are accredited for all major brands: Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Daikin, Hitachi, LG and so on. They have an obligation-free home appraisal service to advise customers which heat pump is best for them, so if you are getting a heat pump this year make sure you make the right choice. Phone their friendly staff on 0800 47 48 97 or visit www.heatpumpguys.co.nz.

Get rid of dampness

in your house

N

ow with the colder and wetter weather on its way, homeowners are focusing on ways to make their homes comfortable, warm and healthy throughout winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects many older properties which suffer from poor, or no, insulation. In Canterbury, especially post-quake, many people have relocated to homes that suffer from rising damp which can be associated with health problems. Independent tests have shown that up to 40L of water can rise from the ground and enter a house every day, leading to mildew, mould, condensation and musty smells. Moulds can produce various allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and very young are vulnerable. Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a locally owned and operated firm. The team understands the problems caused by rising damp and are here to help. They will come to your damp home and pump a lightweight, flowable foam concrete under your timber

floored home. Specially adapted for our New Zealand conditions and applications, it provides a layer of protection against rising moisture. An unexpected benefit that the team at Canterbury Foam Concrete have noticed recently, is that many who had underfloor foam concrete installed reported that it also provided protection against liquefaction after the earthquakes. Contact Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd now for your free no-obligation quote and complimentary appraisal of your underfloor ventilation needs. Phone them on 03 376 4608 or 0508 362 626 for more information.

NOR’WEST NEWS

Monday May 18 2015

It's that time of year again - so dust off your best frock and treat yourself to Ladies Night at Addington Raceway!

Its glitz and glamour all the way as you are treated to an exclusive night in Silks this Friday 22 May from 5.30pm. The complementary bubbles on arrival is just the start. Your seats are the best in the house, having views overlooking the track and you could also throw in a few bets on the side, to add to the excitement. You will indulge in a gourmet buffet meal whilst listening to one of our top sports girls - Sophie Pascoe, World Champion Swimmer and 2015 Canterbury Sportswoman of the Year. The major prize draw is for a three night stay in Sydney, complete with accommodation, flights and $1,000 spending money. There is also a night in Hanmer Springs to be won. A silent auction will

take place to support the charity of the night, St John, with some stunning items available. Some fabulous jewellery will also be auctioned along with a number of spot prizes given away throughout the evening. At the end of the evening live band 'The Elevators' will allow you to dance the night away in the company of your friends. When all these are combined together, it makes this, simply a night not to be missed. Tickets are $55 per person or $490 for a table of ten. Don't miss out - text your friends and colleagues now and book. Tickets and more information at addington.co.nz.
